A. Academics

  • It is important to learn the theory of diving. To accomplish this, you will be using the PADI Open Water Diver manual or CD-ROM. It is required reading. Knowledge reviews at the end of each module are to be completed at home and turned in at the beginning of the next class. (This completed knowledge review is you admission ticket to the next class.) A copy of the PADI video may be given to you to watch at home. A credit card deposit will be collected. At the end of the class, please return the video or your card will be charged $32.
  • We may use video and/or slide presentations in class. In addition, the Instructor will elaborate on several key points.
  • As part of the learning process, we will have quizzes of 10 questions each. (1 each class) A 50-question final exam completes the academic section of this course.
  • Please be sure to bring a pen or pencil and notebook or paper to class each week.

You must pick up you book and video or CD-ROM before your first class so you get the first night homework completed.

B. Confined Water training

  • We will get in the swimming pool with the SCUBA gear and learn some of the unique procures for using SCUBA during this phase of the course.
  • Confined Water training takes place in our warm, onsite pool each night of your training including the first. Bring a swimsuit and a towel to each class.
  • As part of the Confined Water training, we will conduct a waterman ship assessment exercise, usually on the last night of the class. It will consist of a 200-yard swim using any style stroke. If you like, you may use mask, snorkel and fins for 300-yards. It is not timed. You will also complete a 10-minute trend in water too deep to stand.

C. Open Water Training

  • After you have received the information from the academic sessions and the confined-water training, we then go to an actual Open Water dive location. At the Open Water, we will perform all of the skills learned in confined water, and gain experience in the open water under the watchful eye of your PADI Instructor. This is where you will truly learn to dive.
