Welcome to DIVE
UTAH'S Open Water Scuba Class! This is your ticket to the fun and
excitement of scuba diving. This orientation is very important in making
sure you are aware of all the details of the class ahead of time. Please
be sure to read all the section of this handout immediately and call the
shop if you have any questions.
1. ADMINISTRATIVE
The following items must be filled out by each person on the first night
of class -
- Safe Diving Statement
of Understanding
- Liability Release
- Medical Statement
- all questions are designed to be answer with a NO response - (a YES
response doesn't necessarily preclude you from diving, it only means
you need to get a doctor's OK - We have a medical
form for you.)
- Anyone under the
age of 12 must sign the Youth Diving form.
- Anyone under the
age of 18 must also have a parent or guardian sign all of the forms.
We recommend you
fill out the Medical Statement ASAP in case you need a doctor's OK.
2. COURSE FEES
The fees that you paid for this course covers pool fees, equipment rental,
administration costs, and certification card upon completion. Not included
are the costs of any personal gear, books, or any costs associated with
Open Water Training such as gas, food, lodging, etc. Some Open Water sites
have entry fees that are not included.
Course fees may be
paid with cash, check or credit card. ALL fees must completely
paid prior to attending the Open Water Training.
3. CLASS SCHEDULE
We offer many different class options depending upon your needs. Students
may choose once a week for five week or twice a week for two and one-half
week. Normally classes' start at 5:30 PM Monday through Friday and Saturday
classes can be schedule at the groups' discretion. Sunday classes can
also be accommodated. With our on site pool we can accelerate the class
and do a certification in as little as two and one-half days if required.
Just let us know what your schedule is.
4. COURSE STRUCTURE
A. Academics
- It is important
to learn the theory of diving. To accomplish this, you will be using
the PADI Open Water Diver manual or CD-ROM. It is required reading.
Knowledge reviews at the end of each module are to be completed at home
and turned in at the beginning of the next class. (This completed knowledge
review is you admission ticket to the next class.) A copy of the PADI
video may be given to you to watch at home. A credit card deposit will
be collected. At the end of the class, please return the video or your
card will be charged $32.
- We may use video
and/or slide presentations in class. In addition, the Instructor will
elaborate on several key points.
- As part of the
learning process, we will have quizzes of 10 questions each. (1 each
class) A 50-question final exam completes the academic section of this
course.
- Please be sure
to bring a pen or pencil and notebook or paper to class each week.
You must
pick up you book and video or CD-ROM before your first class so you
get the first night homework completed.
B. Confined Water
training
- We will get in
the swimming pool with the SCUBA gear and learn some of the unique procures
for using SCUBA during this phase of the course.
- Confined Water
training takes place in our warm, onsite pool each night of your training
including the first. Bring a swimsuit and a towel to each class.
- As part of the
Confined Water training, we will conduct a waterman ship assessment
exercise, usually on the last night of the class. It will consist of
a 200-yard swim using any style stroke. If you like, you may use mask,
snorkel and fins for 300-yards. It is not timed. You will also complete
a 10-minute trend in water too deep to stand.
C. Open Water Training
- After you have
received the information from the academic sessions and the confined-water
training, we then go to an actual Open Water dive location. At the Open
Water, we will perform all of the skills learned in confined water,
and gain experience in the open water under the watchful eye of your
PADI Instructor. This is where you will truly learn to dive.
- Open Water training
consists of 4 dives made over a 2-period. (2 dives each day.)
- A LOGBOOK
is required to record your dives.
5. PERSONAL GEAR
All gear is provided for you including Mask Snorkel and Fins Except for
the last day of your open water dives. You may choose to rent them for
$15.00 if you wish. All instructors highly encourage that you purchase
at least your own mask snorkel and fins and booties. It allows you to
become familiar with them thus decreasing the amount of stress you may
experience with unfamiliar gear. We have special packages and if your
needs be you can assemble your own package and receive 15% off the items
while a student.
6. CERTIFICATION
- Upon successful
completion of all parts of this course, you will be issued a PADI Open
Water Diver certification. You will need to provide two a head and shoulder
photo for your permanent card. "Passport Photos"
- This prestigious
credential allows you to buy and rent SCUBA equipment, get air fills,
dive at resorts and on boats worldwide without an Instructor present.
It is the beginning of your future underwater enjoyment and adventure.
