About the Course

Share your love of diving with others.

Whether you want to teach part time with a local dive shop or travel the world working at a resort or on a live-aboard, the adventure of a lifetime is waiting for you!

About the Classs
As a PADI professional, you will be at the forefront of diver education. The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is divided into two sections, The Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. This approach allows you to split the course into two blocks of time if you need.

Classroom
You will learn about the PADI System and how to apply it in the teaching of all levels of training. Through Self-study Knowledge Reviews, knowledge development sessions, candidate teaching presentations and workshops, you’ll learn to teach the academic sections of PADI classes. In the Confined Water or pool portion, you’ll refine your skills and participate in workshops and teaching presentations as you learn to teach the water portions of the courses. At the Open Water portion, you will conduct further workshops, rescue assessment and teaching presentations in a realistic dive environment.

Prerequisites

You’ll need to be 18 or older and PADI Advanced Open WaterRescue Diver and Divemaster certified or equivalent. You need to be in good physical condition for diving and have a diving-medical exam conducted within the last year. You must have a minimum of 60 logged dives to start the course and 100 to take the IE. As an Instructor, you are expected to have your own equipment that is professional, both in appearance as well as performance. Liability and medical statements MUST be signed prior to the first class.

Gear Requirements

You must expand your kit from the standard scuba gear you used for your Open Water Certification. Some of this equipment includes a compass, dive knife, and dive computer. You may need specialized equipment such as dive lights, reels & SMB, and camera/video equipment for specialty dives and courses. Your scuba diving instructor will advise you on which equipment you need and when.

Instructor Examination
Once you have completed the IDC, you are ready for your Instructor Examination (IE). At your IE, you will be independently evaluated by a PADI Instructor Examiner on everything from dive theory to in water skills.

Already an Assistant Instructor or an Instructor from another Agency?

PADI recognizes that you are an experienced professional who only needs an orientation to the PADI system. Therefore, you need only attend the OWSI program followed by the IE.

Already a PADI Instructor?
Dive professionals who have the right skills can work anywhere in the world. Employers will seek them out. As a PADI Instructor, you can increase your marketability and create a greater demand for yourself by becoming a PADI Specialty Instructor, Emergency First Response Instructor, Master Scuba Diver Trainer or an IDC Staff Instructor. We offer all of these classes at Dive Utah.
